“My set up for the Hollywood run of the touring production of Pippin was very much based on Sean Ritenauer's set up for the Broadway production with a few minor changes. It's an interesting show with a wide ranging and busy percussion book. Lot's of timpani, xylophone, sound effects and hand drumming as well. It is a fun opportunity to groove on congas, play a djembe solo, play a barrage of xylophone notes and test your timpani pedaling all in the same gig.

With all of the quick instrument and mallet changes, I would not want to do this book without a Miller Machine. It gets a great sound on the triangle and there are numerous times in the show where you have to go directly from xylophone or timpani to triangle without so much as a sixteenth note rest. The Miller Machine allowed me to do that and get the sound that I wanted out of each and every triangle note!"

Brian has played on over 500 albums. And his numerous TV and film credits include Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, King Kong, Wall-E, Hairspray, A Bug's Life, A Perfect Storm, Spiderman II, The Bourne Supremacy, Team America, Cars, and over a hundred more.

He has also performed live with Barbra Streisand, Teena Marie, Elton John, Billy Joel, Chaka Khan, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and many more.

Brian is a proud endorser of Yamaha Concert Percussion, Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, Zildjian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Toca Percussion, and Gibraltar Hardware.

"Conducting a National Tour is incredibly challenging, but so rewarding. Stepping on to the podium with a new orchestra every few weeks really keeps you on your toes. Every player responds differently so you are constantly adjusting to get the desired result. I would compare it to playing a multi-percussion piece where the instruments are constantly moving."
"After a grueling four years at SUNY I still had one theory class left to finish. I was really depressed. A classmate of mine recommended me for a tour of a Broadway show. This completely changed the course of my life."
"When I first got the call to start working on Ain’t Too Proud - The Life And Times Of The Temptations, I was curious about which era the show was going to focus on. Their career began in the early 1960’s and they’re still releasing albums today."
"The timpani tunings are the real challenge of The Little Mermaid. Changing pitches must be done by feel, that was my biggest challenge. Memorizing the mallet parts was also very necessary."
"As you can see in the pictures, I prefer to have as much 'stuff' right in front of me, as close as possible. Because there are so many instruments close in, I have mounted a music stand off of the tom mount.
"Different from the tour, the original Broadway production had acoustic drums, an acoustic set of timbales, and an acoustic tambourine - the tambourine is now programmed in the SPD-SX."
