Noah:

"I'm currently playing drums on the 2nd National Tour of Sara Bareilles' Tony Award Nominated musical, Waitress. It's been really great getting to tour with such a compact setup. I try to emulate Sara's great drummers, and more importantly, the original Broadway drummer Rich Mercurio as best I can, and the music doesn't call for anything much bigger than the kit I'm using.

While having all the cymbals and drums to hit in a 360 setup is always fun, it's been an awesome experience to try to get the most out of this smaller setup. Not to mention, it's also much easier to tour around!

On the Roland SPD and Trigger Pad, I'm mostly doing sound effects as well as a few drum loops. We also run some of the click for the show off the SPD, some of which is triggered by me, and some of which is triggered from a foot pedal by the Musical Director.

Since the band is visible onstage for the all of the scenes that take place in the diner, we are given a prop coffee mug and encouraged to chat with each other and appear like regular diner patrons during the time that we are not playing. The poppy flower is used for a dream sequence, where the band does some basic choreography along with the ensemble, such as snapping, tapping our feet, and sniffing the fake poppy. Being on stage has definitely been a change of pace, since I'm used to playing in a pit or at least offstage for shows. I find that you have to stay much more engaged, and I feel super aware of all of my movements, especially when I'm not playing!"

Waitress - Tour - Noah Hadland
November 2019 thru Present

Noah Hadland's setup for the 2nd National Tour of Waitress at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
"Conducting a National Tour is incredibly challenging, but so rewarding. Stepping on to the podium with a new orchestra every few weeks really keeps you on your toes. Every player responds differently so you are constantly adjusting to get the desired result. I would compare it to playing a multi-percussion piece where the instruments are constantly moving."
"After a grueling four years at SUNY I still had one theory class left to finish. I was really depressed. A classmate of mine recommended me for a tour of a Broadway show. This completely changed the course of my life."
"When I first got the call to start working on Ain’t Too Proud - The Life And Times Of The Temptations, I was curious about which era the show was going to focus on. Their career began in the early 1960’s and they’re still releasing albums today."

Ron Grassi's drum set setup for Mean Girls at Archbishop Performing Arts, in Warminster, Pennsylvania.

"The main challenge that I found with this show was the very quick instrument and stick changes. Having a good pair of swizzle sticks is necessary to go from tambourine to timpani and sometimes rolls on the concert bass drum."
"The real impetus of this book is the timpani. It is definitely the driving force for the percussion inBack to the Future and it requires a big articulate sound and once again Yamaha with the Evans Orchestral White Opaque Heads just deliver."

Gene Krupa's drum solo from "Gene's Blues" from the album Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich released November 1955.

Steve Jordan's drum solo from the title track of the album Casa Loco.
Robbie Ameen's drum solo from the track "Spring Fling".
